¿Quienes son los Inmortales?

COMO BIEN DICE SU NOMBRE, LOS INMORTALES SON HOMBRES Y MUJERES QUE NO PUEDEN MORIR. NACEN COMO SERES MORTALES HASTA EL MOMENTO DE SU PRIMERA MUERTE, DESPUÉS DE LA CUAL DEJAN DE ENVEJECER Y NO PUEDEN MORIR A NO SER QUE SE LES CORTE LA CABEZA.

EN PALABRAS DE LOS GUIONISTAS PETER BELLWOOD Y LARRY FERGUSON, LOS INMORTALES SON SERES CREADOS POR LA NATURALEZA, INCAPACES DE MORIR SALVO POR DECAPITACIÓN, QUE PRESENTAN UN SEXTO SENTIDO INNATO, EL QUICKENING, QUE LES PERMITE CONECTAR CON LA FUERZA VITAL DE LOS SERES VIVOS.

Nature has created an indeterminate number of immortals. These immortals are not the result of extra-terrestrial influences, like gods meddling in the affairs of men. They are a natural phenomenon, the result of genetic misfunction. These immortals can all be killed by a sword chopping off their heads, and each possesses a "sixth sense" called "The Quickening".(...) 
The Quickening" is a TELEPATHIC PHENOMENON, dramatized by the scene with the stag and Ramirez's words: "We are at one with all living things."

CUANDO DOS INMORTALES ESTÁN CERCA PUEDEN SENTIR SU PRESENCIA DEBIDO A LA INTERFERENCIA QUE SE PRODUCE ENTRE SUS QUICKENINGS.

BELLWOOD Y FERGUSONThe fact that "The Quickening" is a telepathic power is futher indicated by each immortal's capacity to sense the other's existence. For example, MacLeod feels ill when first confronted by the Kurgan. He experiences a similar sensation when he meets Ramirez.

RAMIREZ (GUION 1983)
As an immortal, I interfere with your Quickening. If you were to take my head, my interference would stop. My power would transfer to you. You would be stronger. the last immortal will have everyone´s power, without interference. To live forever without want or fear of death.

· Esta interferencia es lo que se llamaría "The Buzz" en la serie de TV, un zumbido que siente un inmortal cuando uno de su raza se encuentra cerca. 

INICIALMENTE NACEN COMO MORTALES, ENVEJECEN Y SE LASTIMAN COMO EL RESTO DE LOS SERES HUMANOS, PERO YA POSEEN EL QUICKENING EN SU INTERIOR. ESTO PERMITE QUE UN INMORTAL PUEDAS SABER SI UN HUMANO ES UN PRE-INMORTAL O NO.

· En la película, Kurgan sabía que Connor estaba destinado a renacer como inmortal y, durante su combate, Connor sintió algo cuando Kurgan estaba cerca.

RAMIREZ
When we first met, you felt ill, remember? That wasn't the first time...you felt that sensation, was it? 

CONNOR
No. When the Macleods fought the Frazers...and a black knight...I felt it then. Only it was more painful.

CUANDO SUFREN UNA MUERTE VIOLENTA, SU PRIMERA MUERTE, RENACEN COMO INMORTALES, DEJANDO DE ENVEJECER DESDE ESE MOMENTO Y SIENDO INCAPACES DE MORIR SALVO POR DECAPITACIÓN.

RAMIREZ (NOVELIZACIÓN)

· Sin embargo, su capacidad de regeneración es limitada: se sabe que las heridas en la zona del cuello cicatrizan, no regeneran por completo. El Kurgan tenía en la garganta una cicatriz de su combate contra Ramirez que le dañó las cuerdas vocales. 

"Like MacLeod, he hasn't aged -- but a hideous scar runs from ear-to ear across his throat. It affects his voice,turning it into a metallic gurgle"

CUANDO UN INMORTAL SUFRE UNA AMPUTACIÓN SU CAPACIDAD DE REGENERACIÓN LE PERMITE CURAR LA HERIDA. NO OBSTANTE, NO SON CAPACES DE REGENERAR LA PARTE DEL CUERPO PERDIDA.

· Un ejemplo de esto es el personaje de Xavier St. Cloud, villano de la serie de TV, que perdió una mano tras un combate con Duncan.

(...) the character of Xavier St. Cloud, with one hand, which is interesting because it posed a number of questions for us as to whether a hand regenerates. And we had decided that it didn't, even for Immortals -- that they could heal, but they couldn't regenerate and grow appendages (...).

LOS INMORTALES NO SON INMUNES AL DOLOR.

· Gregory Widen, autor del guión original, deja claro que los inmortales sufren dolor como el resto de los mortales. Una de sus críticas a la película original fue la escena donde Connor, bajo los efectos del alcohol, sufre varias estocadas en el pecho sin apenas quejarse. 

GREGORY WIDEN"There were logic issues that crept in after me that make me cringe, like Connor being all jokey as he’s run-through by a sword during a duel. The whole idea was that they don’t die but they feel agonising pain. There’s moments where the production kinda winged it and silly stuff like that crept in."

LOS INMORTALES NO PUEDEN AHOGARSE, DANDO A ENTENDER QUE NO NECESITAN RESPIRAR.

· Por ejemplo, cuando Connor cae al fondo el lago, Ramirez le dice que no puede ahogarse

RAMIREZ 
You can't drown, you fool. You're immortal.

· Sin embargo, los inmortales de la serie de tv sí que pueden ahogarse y sufrir los efectos de toxinas y venenos. Esto es debido a que este tipo de inmortales sufren "muertes temporales" cuando reciben daños mortales, resucitando a los pocos minutos.

· La serie de TV presenta situaciones límite donde los inmortales sufren las consecuencias de sus "muertes temporales", por ejemplo, cuando un inmortal es condenado a morir de hambre. Este fue el caso de Kinkaid, un inmortal atrapado en una isla desierta que, debido al ciclo de muertes temporales y resurrecciones que sufren los inmortales de la serie, fue condenado a "morir" de hambre varias veces hasta que consiguió escapar.

KINCAID
No, MacLeod. You gave me death...a thousand times over. For one hundred years, a living, dying hell of unending thirst and unbearable hunger. Do you know what hell is like, MacLeod? You live on rats, snakes. And when they're all gone, flies. And when everything is dead, you starve to death. Again... and again... and again.

· El productor Bill Panzer afirmó en una ocasión que uno de los mayores miedos de un inmortal sería ser enterrado vivo.

One of an Immortal's greatest fears is to be buried alive and probably un-found for thousands of years (...)

AUNQUE LA DECAPITACIÓN ES LA ÚNICA FORMA CONOCIDA DE MATAR A UN INMORTAL, NO SE PUEDE DESCARTAR QUE SE LES PUEDA MATAR DE OTRA FORMA.

· En la novelización hay una escena donde Connor le pregunta a Ramirez qué hubiera pasado si los aldeanos le hubiesen quemado. Ramirez afirma que la decapitación es la única forma conocida de matarles pero no descarta que puedan morir si son quemados vivos.

I wouldn't test it out. It's the only weaknes we know of, there may be more (...).
